M.Large Tree Services Ltd has been operating since 1970. That is not a headline; it is a fact that shapes everything the company does. More than five decades in forestry equipment, tree surgery and plant hire means accumulated knowledge that simply cannot be shortcut.

This article sets out what M.Large does, who it does it for, and why the depth of experience matters when you are choosing a supplier for machinery or tree services.

Two Businesses, One Company

M.Large operates across two distinct areas, and it is worth understanding both.

The first is tree surgery and associated services: professional arboricultural work for private homeowners, landowners, housing associations, councils and organisations throughout Northern Ireland. The second is the sale, hire and servicing of forestry equipment for professional buyers across the UK and Ireland, with over 500 machines sold each year.

These two sides of the business are not coincidental. Decades of hands-on tree surgery gave M.Large a direct understanding of what forestry equipment needs to do in real working conditions. That practical background is still reflected in how the company advises customers today.

Forestry Equipment: What M.Large Stocks and Why

M.Large holds over 300 processors and splitters in stock at any time, across new and used machinery. The showroom in Newtownabbey is one of the largest forestry equipment showrooms in Europe.

The range covers:

Wood chippers. For tree surgeons and land managers processing brash and branch wood on site. M.Large stocks the GreenMech range, including the Arborist 130 and the EVO 165 series, covering outputs from professional arboricultural work through to high-volume commercial chipping.

Firewood processors and log splitters. The Hakki Pilke range is built specifically for firewood producers and covers everything from smaller-scale operations to commercial throughput. The Hakki Pilke 55 Pro, for example, handles logs up to 55cm and is designed for all-day production use. BMF and Bilke processors are also available for buyers looking at different capacity ranges.

Stump grinders. M.Large introduced stump grinders to Ireland over 40 years ago. The current range covers tracked narrow-access models, wheeled units for open sites, and remote-controlled machines for slopes and difficult ground. [LINK → Stump Grinders — forestryequipmentuk.com]

Flail mowers and mulchers. The Ferri and Camon ranges handle verge cutting, vegetation management and light woodland clearance. Both tractor-mounted and self-propelled options are available. [LINK → Flail Mowers — forestryequipmentuk.com]

Timber milling. M.Large recently became the UK and Ireland distributor for Zenz timber milling equipment, adding precision timber processing to an already broad machinery range.

The full list of brands stocked includes Hakki Pilke, GreenMech, Husqvarna, Farmi, BMF, Atmos, Ferri, Camon, Zenz, Biojack, Nokka, Bilke, Baltrotor, Intermercato, LMS Design, KGD, Fuelwood and Akvaterm.

Tree Surgery Services in Northern Ireland

M.Large's tree surgery operation covers the full range of arboricultural work for residential and commercial clients across Northern Ireland.

Services include:

  • Crown reduction — reducing the height and spread of a tree while maintaining its natural form

  • Crown thinning — selective removal of branches to increase light and air movement through the canopy

  • Deadwooding — removal of dead, dying or damaged branches to reduce risk and improve tree health

  • Pollarding — a specialist cut applied to certain species to manage size and extend the life of the tree

  • Felling and removal — full removal where required, including site clearance

  • Tree surveys and reports — condition assessments for planning applications, insurance purposes, and estate management

All work is carried out by NPTC-qualified arborists. M.Large holds Safe T Cert accreditation and is certified to ISO 9001:2008. For work at height on larger trees or in constrained spaces, the team uses a MEWP (Mobile Elevated Working Platform) where appropriate.

If you are a homeowner or organisation in Northern Ireland with a tree that needs attention, the first step is a survey. Contact the team directly to arrange one.

Plant Hire

For projects that require machinery on a temporary basis, M.Large's plant hire service covers a range of forestry and arboricultural equipment across Northern Ireland.

Plant hire makes practical sense for one-off clearance projects, for contractors supplementing their own fleet on a larger job, or for organisations that need access machinery for occasional tree work without the capital outlay of ownership.

When specifying a plant hire requirement, the key details to have ready are working height, access width to the site, load requirements and duration of hire.

Why Experience Matters

M.Large was the first company to introduce wood chippers and stump grinders to Ireland. That was more than 40 years ago. Since then, the company has watched suppliers come and go, machinery develop significantly, and the professional standards in arboriculture and forestry change considerably.

What has not changed is the company's approach. Many staff members have been with M.Large for 10 years or more; some for upwards of 40. Long-standing customer relationships are a direct result of consistent, straightforward service over many years.

When a professional buyer is making a significant equipment purchase, or a homeowner needs tree work done on a mature specimen near their property, that depth of experience is not a marketing point. It is what the conversation is built on.
